Textual and Quantitative Analysis: Towards a new, e-mediated Social Science
نویسندگان
چکیده
The analysis of large volumes of quantitative data in social sciences has a long tradition: mathematical modelling and statistical analysis can now be performed on large, distributed data sets and the results of such computations can be variously visualised. Qualitative research, and the concomitant data acquired, is no longer confined to ‘issues of “subjective” meaning’ but embraces exciting areas of ‘language, representation and social organisation’ (Silverman 2004:1). Research in qualitative analysis deals with patterns of linguistic discourse, with researchers scrutinizing linguistic output obtained through interviews, focusgroup sessions, e-mail archives, and so on. The discourse patterns are often identified and ‘coded’ by hand for subsequent retrieval and analysis.

"What else are you worried about?" – Integrating textual responses into quantitative social science research
Open-ended questions have routinely been included in large-scale survey and panel studies, yet there is some perplexity about how to actually incorporate the answers to such questions into quantitative social science research. Tools developed recently in the domain of natural language processing offer a wide range of options for the automated analysis of such textual data, but their implementat...
